Ellery folded the paper and handed it back to Clint. “Return in defeat, will I? He doesn’t know me very well.” She paused a moment. “You know, what I don’t understand is how he got wind of the story. I didn’t tell anyone in D.C. except my next-door neighbor, who is my most trusted friend, and my boss at WMDC.”

“Someone may have inadvertently slipped. Your boss could have mentioned it to his wife. Your friend’s children could have overheard her telling her husband. A secretary at the TV station could have told someone in strict confidence. You may never know the identity of the snitch. Even the president of the United States isn’t safe from leaks.”

“I know. But how did he learn Susan Littleton is my sister?” She didn’t meant to sound accusatory, but she supposed she did because Clint held his hands up defensively.

“Whoa! We Littletons don’t talk to reporters, especially not about something like this that cuts so close to the bone.” He paused, his expression dead serious. “The Eubanks clan keeps mum on this subject, as you well know. And I don’t see anyone in the police department, who are all dedicated, loyal people, doing anything so low. I’m stumped.”

“It’s so disheartening to find your private matters making headlines,” Ellery said with a sigh.

“You knew that sort of thing happened when you became a reporter and I’ll wager you’ve spilled the beans on more than one case when you got wind of something.”

She scowled. “If that was supposed to make me feel better, it didn’t work.”

He grinned. “Want me to try something else?”

“No.”

“What does the T in Sherman T. DeWitt stand for?”

“Thaddeus. Sherman loves to remind everyone he is a descendant of Wellford Thaddeus Thorndale of the Alabama Thorndales, whoever they were.”

Clint’s rumbling laughter was infectious, and soon she joined in, thinking that laughter was the very best medicine.

He put the paper down on the entry table. “Why don’t you ride out to the ranch with me? You need a change of scenery and it’s a cinch you aren’t going to go back to sleep now.”

“I haven’t had a chance to wash my face. I haven’t brushed my teeth. I haven’t even had a cup of coffee. I’m standing here talking to you in my robe and gown.” She was about to tell him to take a hike and realized that wouldn’t be very polite. Ye gods, she thought, am I turning into one of these kind and considerate Texans, where I worry about hurting someone’s feelings with my harsh Yankee ways?

She must be, she thought, when the next thing she said was, “If I am going to be awakened at this wretched hour, I think I should be given enough time to at least make myself a cup of coffee and get dressed. If you’d like, you can join me…for the coffee, that is.” She wanted to kick herself for the soft, smoky tone to her voice.

He must have liked it because there was a flirtatious gleam in his blue eyes…definitely flirtatious.
